A healthy environment ensures a healthy community. This is the main vision of Ahote Sanitation Project. Ahote project is an initiative that seeks to create awareness of the need to cultivate environmental sustainability practices in our society. We do this by engaging the youth to champion positive social change in their own communities by introducing them to sustainable practices such as recycling and composting which is geared towards attaining Sustainable Development Goal 13 — Climate Change .Find out more about Ahote project here.

Recycling

The organization currently works with other inhabitants of Berekuso who collect water sachet from households and pay them 20 Ghana cedis for every thirty-kilogram bag of water sachet accumulated.

Sports

School children love sports. Ahote Sanitation project tries to direct some of their enthusiasm they have towards sports to Sanitation. After their daily soccer training, Somnia Academy kids are taken through some basic sanitation concepts like Recycling as well as personal hygiene.

Environmental Workshops

Holding an hour-long workshop in schools is one of the exciting things we do. The students are always excited to learn the new things about how to manage and segregate waste.

Workshop at Berekuso

On October 26, 2018, we had a great workshop with the kids at Berekuso Basic School. They were happy to learn about recycling and composting. We left them with a small package that got them very excited. I took them through the process of making a pencil case out of bottles. For this activity we used the following materials:

Materials needed

1. Two bottles

2. Zipper

3. Glue Gun with glue stick

Steps:

Cutting the bottles
Cutting the bottles
